Jack Ward compass

Recent MMF News
Captain Jack Ward visited the Mathews Maritime Foundation (MMF) Museum on Feb. 4, 2009 to donate an enclosed ship's compass and a type of fire extinguisher no longer used in today's ships. The compass is estimated to be about 80 years old and was used on the local workboat "Cavalier" (see MMF calendar Feb. 2006 for picture of the "Cavalier").

Captain Ward also talked about the pictures at the museum that show some of his over 40 years of maritime experiences including when he was captain of the "Overseas Valdez," an oil tanker that visited ports all over the world. His career has taken him to places such as Iran, Singapore, and Russia, and as such is part of the long tradition of Mathews men in the maritime trades.

The MMF Museum is always interested in photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia regarding Mathews' rich maritime history and we welcome your donations and loans.
